Spay Day 2008
From Sharon McNair
Pet overpopulation is a serious problem affecting millions of animals every year. At Green Mountain Animal Defenders' (GMAD's) request, Governor Jim Douglas and Mayor Bob Kiss have acknowledged this issue by signing proclamations designating February 26th as Spay Day USA in Vermont.
As a member of the board of directors of GMAD, I am very aware of the dire consequences which occur when people neglect to spay or neuter their companion animals. Recent statistics reveal that 56% of the dogs and 71% of the cats that are placed in shelters in the United States will eventually be euthanized only because there are not enough homes for them.
Please take part in the 14th annual Spay Day USA to help prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens. The results of your efforts will extend well beyond that day, as will the benefits to the community and to the health and well-being of the animals. Therefore, GMAD will be extending this important program throughout the coming months.
For low cost options to spay or neuter an animal locally, to make a donation toward spaying/neutering an animal in need, to learn about other animal protection topics or to volunteer please call 861-3030.
On February 26th, GMAD is sponsoring a special spay and neuter clinic in honor of SPAY DAY USA 2008. GMAD will fund the spaying and neutering of at least 24 female and 14 male cats.
