Encouraging Compassion
Whit Hewat, GMAD volunteer, was invited to speak to two senior psychology classes at Montpelier High School on the topic of ethics and animal experimentation.
During his presentation, Whit addressed the need for strict reform in animal research with regard to the types and frequency of experiments in which animals are used as subjects. He mentioned several new research alternatives that have yielded promising results without the need for animals.
Finally, Whit challenged the concept of ?human entitlement? as a means of justifying the wanton use of animals for the benefit of mankind. Human entitlement is the notion that the natural world has no value outside of its utility to humans. Often those who conduct or sponsor animal experiments which causes animal suffering attempt to use this rationale to justify their actions.
Whit has also spoken at the University of Vermont and other venues, encouraging young people to further develop their compassion for animals. We believe that bringing this humane perspective to schools is essential to awakening compassion in today?s youth.
